Puppy Health
Nutrition
Diet and what we feed our dogs is important for their growth and well-being. There are so many options out there today that it can be overwhelming. Some of the main nutrition companies, we as vets work with include: Royal Canin, Purina and Hill’s. We trust these companies as they staff veterinary nutritionists to ensure dogs are receiving all the nutrients they require and this is especially true in puppy nutrition.
Puppies should eat puppy formulated food for optimal development
Large breed puppies should eat a LARGE BREED formulated puppy food which should be denoted on the bag somewhere
Spay and neuter decisions
As veterinarians who mostly see dogs not intended for breeding, we generally recommend spaying or neutering. Benefits of these procedures include helping reduce ovarian, testicular, uterine, prostatic and mammary tumours; reduce the risk of unwanted puppies; uterine infections (pyometra); and other complications of the reproductive tract.
When do I spay my dog? What is the earliest I can neuter this little humper?
One of the main questions today is at what age to perform a spay or neuter. This can vary based on the breed of dog, expected size of the dog, and client preference. We are happy to discuss this further in your puppy appointments and determine what is best for you and your puppy!
